Office 2016 for Mac is a version of Office that’s available as a one-time purchase from a retail store or through a volume licensing agreement. It will be supported with security updates and bug fixes, as needed, until October 13, 2020. The minimum supported macOS for Office 2016 for Mac is 10.10 (Yosemite).
Existing Office 2016 for Mac customers will be seamlessly upgraded to 64-bit versions of Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, and OneNote as part of the August product release (version 15.25). This affects customers of all license types: Retail, Office 365 Consumer, Office 365 Commercial, and Volume License installations. Now in Office for Mac, you can open Word, Excel, and PowerPoint files saved in OpenDocument Format (.odt,.ods,.odp) and convert them to editable Microsoft OOXML files (.docx,.xlsx,.pptx ). Note: You'll need to be connected to the internet to open ODF files and convert them to OOXML files. Updates for Office 2016 for Mac are available from Microsoft AutoUpdate (MAU). To use Microsoft AutoUpdate, start an Office application, such as Word, and then choose Help > Check for Updates. If you're an admin and want to update the computers in your organization with your existing software deployment tools, you can download and deploy the update packages for each application.

The build date is listed in parentheses, in a YYMMDD format, after the version number. You can now get Office Add-ins from the Store or use Add-ins you already have from right within recent versions of Word for Mac and Excel for Mac.
There are two kinds of add-ins: Office Add-ins from the Office Store (which use web technologies like HTML, CSS and JavaScript) and add-ins made by using Visual Basic for Applications (VBA).
If you're looking for a built-in add-in such as Solver or Analysis ToolPak, select the Tools menu and then select Add-ins.

Get an Office Store add-in for Word or Excel for Mac
On the Insert menu, select Add-ins.
To get new add-ins, select Store. To use add-ins you already have, select My Add-ins.
The add-ins you'll see will depend on the app you're using and the kind of Office 365 subscription you have.
Office for Mac doesn't currently support organization-based add-ins.
Get a VBA add-in for Word or Excel for Mac
On the Tools menu, select Add-Ins.
In the Add-Ins available box, select the add-in you want, and then click OK.
